The 4th!

CIMG0784This year we finally got talked into going to the Waxhaw July 4th celebration.

In a word, WOW!

The fireworks were pretty cool, but that’s not what wowed me the most. What blew my mind was that it almost felt more like a Southbrook Church celebration than a ‘Waxhaw one! Everywhere we looked there were people from Southbrook church. When we finally settled in to our spot in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere, the people to our left were from Southbrook as were the folks to the right!

It was a not so subtle reminder of the tremendous responsibility and reach that this church has. I never take it lightly anyway, but this was a not so subtle reminder. The Bible says, “To whom much is given, much will be required.” We’ve been given much as a church—Brookies. Let’s be good stewards of each and every person who comes our way!

Keep on inviting your friends and neighbors to be a part of the life changing experiences at Southbrook Church—a place where God is on the move!

While the INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION in Waxhaw was really fun, my comments have less to do with the actual festivities and more with the fact that the general public has stopped giving Honor to this day by calling it “the fourth of July”. The last time I checked EVERYONE in the world has a fourth of July. It is AMERICA’S INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

Please give true honor where it is due and honor the soldiers that died and continue to die for our freedom and INDEPENDENCE and call it what it is. Do we run around saying Merry December 25th? or even Happy November 24th? (or whatever it ends up being in any given year) Just because it might be easier and quicker to say does not give us the right to be lazy when speaking the words HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Each year at the parade when the elected officials and others shout from their cars and floats “Happy 4th of July”, our family has taken on the responsibility to shout back to them “HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY”. While it rolls of the backs of most, it has gotten to a few of them. Namely the veterens who have actually fought for our freedom. As they drove on, most changed their chant to HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY.

If the idea of getting American’s to stop being lazy when speaking of this great national holiday means anything to you, please PASS IT FORWARD. We can reach our friends, our community, and even the nation by just passing it forward.
